"The character of reality is: τo κρείττoν, the overpowering."- Hans Blumenberg
About
Hi, my name is Amon Raun! I studied philosophy at the universities of Hamburg, Freiburg, and Aarhus with a special interest in the philosophy of Hans Blumenberg. In my master thesis, I analyzed the role of phenomenology in his anthropology, which - through recent posthumous publications - inevitably revealed itself as an underlying philosophical foundation tieing his work together. My interest primarily resolves around anthropology - or: the conditio humana. I am fascinated by the question, what it means to be human and the existential dimension to the discipline. What are the pragmatic procedures we apply to overcome the abyss?
Research
Seeking truth is like sewing off the branch you stand on. Many theorists agree that coherence is a crucial category the mind naturally shifts toward. If an agent now faces new conflicting experiences, we speak of cognitive dissonance, which poses a problem to the coherence of a subject’s belief system. In my research project, I aim to ask which anthropological conditions pose specific threats to open-mindedness in respect to the constitutive functionality of a closed system’s coherence and self-evidence. It develops a phenomenologically grounded account of the cognitive dimension of the human condition by bringing philosophical anthropology into dialogue with virtue epistemology, considering the specific role of epistemic humility as a pragmatic conclusion to the anthropological situation.Through this distinctive interdisciplinary bridge, the project offers a philosophically rigorous framework for research and public debate on polarization, dogmatism, and ideology.
